Industrial Roofing at Church’s Shoe Factory
case study
Overview
This project involved the complete stripping and reinstallation of the industrial roofing at the historic Church’s Shoe Factory in Northampton. Known for its long-standing reputation in shoe manufacturing, this iconic factory required significant roofing refurbishment to maintain its structural integrity and longevity.
A roofing contractor originally responsible for domestic projects sought assistance for this large-scale industrial job. Our team was brought in to supply labor and oversee the installation, ensuring the project was completed efficiently and to a high standard.
Challenges Faced:
1. Complex Roofing Structure:
- Unlike a simple up-and-over installation, this roof had 10 apexes with gutters between them, requiring precise execution.
- Special attention was needed to align the gutters and waterproofing elements correctly.
2. Temporary Waterproofing:
- Given the scale of the project, the roof could not be stripped and replaced in one go.
- Each evening, our team had to waterproof the exposed sections to protect the factory interior from potential damage.
3. Severe Weather Conditions:
- The project period saw three major storms, which made temporary waterproofing crucial.
- High winds and rain posed a challenge, requiring careful planning and additional labor to secure materials overnight.
Work Completed
- Full strip and replacement of the existing industrial roofing.
- Installation of new guttering systems to improve water drainage and longevity.
- Implementation of a robust waterproofing system throughout the project to ensure no internal damage occurred.
- Ensured worksite safety while navigating complex roof structures and adverse weather conditions.
Outcome & Final Delivery
Despite the challenges, the project was successfully delivered within the planned timeframe, providing the client with a fully refurbished and weatherproof industrial roof that enhances the longevity and functionality of the building.
With before-and-after documentation of the work, including on-site images and drone shots, the transformation of the Church’s Shoe Factory roof stands as a testament to the expertise and resilience of our team in handling complex industrial projects.
